How to Select a Medical Weight Loss Practice
The American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) (links to www.asbp.org) recommends that you use the following guidelines when selecting a weight loss physician:
- Does your doctor specialize in overweight and obesity treatment?
- Is your doctor a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians?
- Has your doctor pledged to follow the ASBP Bariatric Practice Guidelines?
- How many years has the doctor's practice been around?
- What kind of initial work-up does the doctor do prior to treating patients for weight loss? Is blood work and metabolism testing performed on patients who have not had it done recently?
My Weight Doctor further recommends that you also ask the following questions when choosing a bariatric (weight loss) physician:
- Will you be evaluated and treated by a doctor on every visit? The same doctor?
- What is the doctor's policy on frequency of follow up visits?
- Does your doctor prescribe medication for weight loss? Does she dispense it from the office?
- Is your doctor educated in Nutrition? Does the doctor and her staff provide nutritional counseling to patients? Vitamins? Supplements?
Please do not hesitate to ask our knowledgeable staff any of these questions. We are proud of the quality of care that we deliver.
